The JKE PAC is operated entirely through the kind support of volunteers. It takes many hundreds of hours of volunteer time to do what we do each year. Joining a team or committee can be a fun experience, and you’ll feel good knowing that you’re helping to support kids at the school. Even if you can only spare a little bit of time for one event it all adds up. Any volunteer time is greatly appreciated.
We will be needing a number of event coordinators for next year. Taking on an event or committee coordinator position need not be a daunting prospect. There’s lots of help available.
Below is a partial list of the events, committees, activities, etc. that you might be interested in. To find out more please attend the next PAC meeting or contact a member of the PAC executive.
Safe Arrival/Call Home Program – when a child is absent from school without prior notification, volunteers call the student’s home to check that the child is safe. The school office cannot afford the time to do this, so a shortage of volunteers could lead to an end to the program. Volunteering involves spending approx. one hour in the morning making calls from the school office. Any mornings you can help out would be greatly appreciated.
Hot Lunch Program –
Environment Committee – the Young Naturalists’ Club for kids, the school’s Earth Day activities, and a number of other programs are put on by the Environment Committee.
Spring Carnival – this “fun-fair” for families occurs in the spring every two years. The event needs lots of volunteers to set up, clean up, run games, etc.
Spooktacular – our very popular Halloween event occurs in October. This event needs lots of volunteers to set up, clean up, run games, etc.
Safety/Emergency Preparedness Committee – in the event of an earthquake or other emergency it’s better to be well prepared than improvising on the spot. The committee sees to the preparation and maintenance of emergency kits etc. for the school.
Canadian Parents for French (CPF) Representative – a new representative is needed to keep the PAC updated with CPF events, announcements, etc.
Room Parent Coordinator – this person gathers a list of PAC room parents, and then distributes communications to them on behalf of the PAC.
PAC Meetings – OK, this isn’t really volunteering, but the more people we get out to meetings the better our PAC runs and the more we can do. Some of our meetings are attended by as few as five or six people (the school has approximately 600 students). Please attend a PAC meeting and show your support. We promise there’s no obligation if you do.
School Planning Council (SPC) – Parents, teachers and principals on School Planning Councils develop school plans to improve student achievement. Please contact the school principal if you’re interested.
PAC Executive – PAC members at the Annual General Meeting (usually held in May) vote for the PAC executive. Many of our PAC executive have been in their positions for a number of years and would now like to move on. The PAC executive is made up of the Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary, DPAC Rep, two or more Members-at-Large, and the Past Chairperson.
Fundraising Committee – this committee coordinates the fundraising efforts of the PAC.
Entertainment Books Fundraising Campaign – this campaign runs at the start of the school year in early September.
Family Photo Nights – this event requires volunteers to check people in and take payment (usually a one hour commitment one evening is all that’s needed). The event runs in the fall.
QSP Magazines Fundraising Campaign – this campaign runs in the fall.
Purdy’s Chocolate Fundraising Campaign – runs in late October.
Poinsettia Fundraising Campaign – runs prior to Christmas.
